A Gift with Purchase campaign gives shoppers a free or discounted product when they meet a condition you set. The admin describes it as "Offer a free or discounted gift with qualifying purchases." Each campaign holds one or more rules, and each rule has two halves: Customer buys and Customer gets.
Setting one up
- Open Hype Campaigns and click Create New Campaign.
- Enter a Campaign name.
- Choose Gift with Purchase as the discount type.
- Choose a Campaign type and a discount method, then click Next.
- Fill in Title or Discount code.
- Set Target markets, ticking Customize amounts for each market if thresholds differ by market.
- Under Customer buys, choose Minimum quantity of items and enter a Quantity, or Minimum purchase amount and enter an Amount.
- Leave All products and collections ticked, or untick it and pick the products or collections that count toward the condition.
- Under Customer gets, choose how the gift is delivered (below).
- Under At a discounted value, choose Free, Percentage or Amount off each.
- Set the gift behavior checkboxes (below).
- To add a second rule, turn on Multiple rules at the top right and configure the next one.
- Set the shared settings — purchase type, customer eligibility, combinations, sales channels and active dates. See common campaign settings.
- Click Next, add a Gift banner block if you want shoppers to see the offer, then click Finish.
Gift with Purchase does not use the shared Minimum purchase requirements setting. Customer buys replaces it, per rule.
Auto-add or let the customer choose
Auto-add to cart — "All selected products will be auto-added to cart." Use Add Products to pick the gifts. Every selected gift is added the moment the rule qualifies. Best when there is one obvious gift and you want zero friction.
Let the customer choose — the shopper picks from your list on the storefront. Set products max to say how many they may take. That number must be less than or equal to the number of gift options you have added; Hype rejects a larger one with "Needs to be ≤ number of options below". Best when the gift is a size, scent or color the shopper should decide.
Both behaviors are driven by Hype's storefront code, so they need the Hype: Discounts app embed enabled in your theme. The chooser is presented by the Gift banner block.
Buy X get Y (BXGY)
Tick Gifts will be the same as selected products (BXGY) to make the qualifying products themselves the gift, instead of picking a separate gift list. This is how you build buy-one-get-one.
Two tracking modes decide what counts as "the same":
- Track by variant — each variant is counted on its own. Buy two of the same size and you qualify; buy one small and one large and you do not.
- Track by product — all variants of a product count together.
Tiered gift quantities
With BXGY on and the condition set to Minimum quantity of items, a Tiered gift quantities checkbox appears: "Give more free gifts at higher purchase quantities (e.g. buy 5 get 1, buy 9 get 3). The highest tier the customer reaches applies."
Ticking it replaces the single Quantity field with a tier editor — the note reads "Buy quantities are set by the gift tiers below." Each row is Buyngetm, with Add tier to add more and Remove to delete one. The first tier is seeded from the minimum quantity you had already set.
Only the highest tier the shopper reaches applies; tiers do not stack. Buy 9 on a "buy 5 get 1, buy 9 get 3" ladder and you get 3 gifts, not 4.
Tiered gifts are unavailable on a Minimum purchase amount condition and unavailable without BXGY.
Gift pricing
Free is the default. Percentage takes a share off each gift. Amount off each takes a fixed amount off each gift — which, on a gift more expensive than that amount, means the shopper still pays the difference.
Removal behavior
Two checkboxes control what happens after the gift is in the cart. Both are off by default.
- Allow customer to remove free gift — "Prevents the gift from being re-added if a customer removes it." Left off, a removed gift comes straight back. Turned on, the shopper's removal sticks for that cart.
- Auto-remove gift when no longer eligible — "Removes the gift when its qualifying items are no longer in the cart." Left off, a gift already added stays in the cart even after the shopper deletes the item that earned it.
Turn the second one on unless you have a reason not to. Without it, a shopper can add a qualifying item, collect the gift, remove the item, and check out with the gift still there.
Multiple rules
Multiple rules lets one campaign carry several independent offers — a gift at 3 items and a different gift at 6, for example. Rules are evaluated on their own, so a shopper who satisfies two rules receives both sets of gifts.
Limits and gotchas
- Gifts are added by Hype's storefront code, not by Shopify. Without the Hype: Discounts app embed enabled in your published theme, no gift is added and no chooser appears.
- Tiered gift quantities requires both BXGY and a quantity condition. The checkbox is hidden otherwise.
- A removed gift returns unless you allow removal. That is deliberate, and it surprises shoppers — decide which behavior you want before going live.
- A gift already in the cart survives losing its trigger unless Auto-remove gift when no longer eligible is on.
- products max must be no larger than the number of gift options.
- Purchase type defaults to One-time purchase. Subscription orders earn no gift unless you change it.
- Combinations start unchecked, so the campaign does not stack with your other discounts by default.
