How volume tiers actually work

A tier is a minimum, not an exact quantity. Each tier has a trigger — a minimum quantity or a minimum amount — and applies from that number until the next tier's number. The customer always gets the tier that saves them the most.

This means a "2, 4 and 6 only" ladder is not possible: a customer who buys 3 keeps the discount from the tier that starts at 2. Set your tiers at 2, 4 and 6 and accept that 3 and 5 are discounted at the tier below.

Two more settings decide how quantities are counted:

  • Buy more of the same product — one product line has to reach the tier on its own.
  • Buy any mix of selected products — the quantities of all eligible lines are added together.

What Hype cannot express

  • Cascading group tiers. "Fill groups of 3 at 30%, then groups of 2 at 20%, and leave the remainder at full price" splits a cart into buckets and prices each bucket differently. No discount type does this, and there is no workaround inside Hype.
  • A fixed price for a quantity. "2 for $50" or "3 for the price of 2" as a fixed total. Volume discount rewards are a percentage off or an amount off, not a target price.
  • All-or-nothing multi-SKU offers. "Buy this bike and this helmet together for $10 off, or no discount at all" is a fixed bundle. It is a separate app, Hype Bundles, not a Hype Discounts campaign.
  • Choosing the better of two rewards. "Whichever is worth more, 10% off or free shipping" cannot be evaluated as a choice.
  • Discounting one variant of a product. See Can I discount a single variant or SKU?.

If your offer is in that list, tell support what you are trying to run. Some of these are on the roadmap, and we would rather tell you what is realistic than have you build something that half-works.
