Volume Discount

A Volume Discount makes buying more units cheaper per unit. The admin describes it as "Reward bulk buyers with better prices as they purchase more." A campaign holds one or more discount rules, each covering its own set of products and its own ladder of tiers — buy 3 get 10% off, buy 5 get 20% off, and so on.
It is a product-level discount. It never touches the order total or shipping.
Setting one up
- Open Hype Campaigns and click Create New Campaign.
- Enter a Campaign name.
- Choose Volume Discount as the discount type.
- Choose a Campaign type and a discount method, then click Next.
- Fill in Title or Discount code.
- Set Target markets, ticking Customize amounts for each market if values differ by market.
- Under Volume Discount #1 → Applies to items from, leave All products and collections ticked, or untick it and pick Products or Collections. Use Exclude Products / Collections to carve items out.
- Under Apply discount when, choose Buy more of the same product or Buy any mix of selected products.
- Under Tier 1, set Customer Buys to Minimum quantity of items or Minimum purchase amount and enter the threshold.
- Set Customer Gets to Percentage or Amount and enter the Discount Value.
- Click Add Tier for each further break.
- Click Add discount to add a second rule for a different product group, and repeat from step 7.
- Set the shared settings — purchase type, customer eligibility, combinations, sales channels and active dates. See common campaign settings.
- Click Next, add a Volume discount selector or Volume discount table block, and click Finish.
Per-product or mixed counting
Apply discount when is the setting that decides what "buying more" means, and it is the one most worth getting right.
- Buy more of the same product — each product's quantity is counted on its own. A cart with 3 of one shirt and 2 of another reaches a "buy 3" tier for the first shirt only; the second shirt is not discounted.
- Buy any mix of selected products — the quantities of every eligible product are added together. The same cart counts as 5 and reaches a "buy 5" tier for both.
Use per-product counting for genuine bulk pricing on a single SKU. Use mixed counting for "any 3 for 20% off" style offers across a collection.
Quantity tiers and amount tiers
Customer Buys takes either a quantity or a spend threshold:
- Minimum quantity of items — the number of units required.
- Minimum purchase amount — the spend required on the rule's eligible products.
Even on an amount threshold, the discount only touches that rule's own products. It is not an order discount with a different name — for that, use Order Discount.
Applies to each item
When Customer Gets is set to Amount — not Percentage — an Applies to each item checkbox appears, with the help text "Apply discount amount to each quantity". Ticked, a $5 tier takes $5 off every qualifying unit, so 4 units save $20. Unticked, the amount comes off once.
Percentage tiers never show this checkbox, because a percentage is already per unit.
Several rules in one campaign
Each Volume Discount # card is a separate rule with its own products, its own counting mode and its own tiers. Add as many as you need with Add discount.
When two rules cover the same product, the first matching rule wins — the later rule is ignored for that product. Put narrow rules above broad ones.
Storefront blocks
Volume Discount has two blocks of its own, both on the Product page tab of the Campaign blocks step:
- Volume discount selector — interactive tier cards on the product page. The shopper picks a tier and the Add to Cart button uses that quantity. Options include Show badge on tier with Badge text (default "Most Popular"), Strike off original price, and Show "Amount off" / "% off" badges.
- Volume discount table — a static table of thresholds and discounts, for when you want the ladder visible without changing the buying flow.
Block copy accepts variables including {{min_quantity}}, {{unit_discounted_price}} and {{final_discounted_price}}.
Limits and gotchas
- Counting mode changes the answer, not just the wording. A cart that qualifies under "any mix" often does not qualify under "same product". Test both against a realistic cart.
- The first matching rule wins when product sets overlap. Order rules from specific to general.
- This type is product-level only. It cannot discount shipping or the order total, whichever threshold you trigger it with.
- A rule with no products selected fails validation — Hype asks you to "Please select at least one item".
- The selector and table blocks need the Hype app embed enabled in your published theme.
- The selector overrides Add to Cart with the selected quantity. Check it against a theme that customizes the product form before going live.
- Purchase type defaults to One-time purchase, so subscription orders get no volume break unless you change it.
- Combinations start unchecked, so this campaign does not stack with your other discounts by default.
