Order Discount

An Order Discount takes a percentage or a fixed amount off the whole order. The admin describes it as "Give a flat or percentage discount on the entire order." It is the simplest of Hype's five types and the right choice for sitewide sales, welcome offers and seasonal promotions.

Setting one up

  1. Open Hype Campaigns and click Create New Campaign.
  2. Enter a Campaign name — internal only.
  3. Choose Order Discount as the discount type.
  4. Choose a Campaign type and a discount method, then click Next.
  5. Fill in Title (automatic) or Discount code (code method). The title is what shoppers see in their cart and at checkout, so make it read like an offer: "10% off your order".
  6. Under Target markets, leave "All markets are selected" or click Edit to narrow it.
  7. Under Minimum purchase requirements, choose No minimum requirements, Minimum purchase amount, or Minimum quantity of items.
  8. Under Discount Value, choose Percentage or Fixed amount and type the value.
  9. Tick Set maximum discount amount if you want a cap, then enter the Maximum discount amount.
  10. Under Exclude products or collections from discount, use Exclude products or Exclude collections to leave items out.
  11. Set the remaining shared settings — purchase type, customer eligibility, combinations, sales channels and active dates. See common campaign settings.
  12. Click Next, add any campaign blocks, and click Finish.

Discount value

Percentage takes a share of the order. A percentage must be between 0 and 100; anything else is rejected with "Percentage must be between 0 and 100".

Fixed amount takes a set amount off the order once — not off each item.

Set maximum discount amount caps what a percentage can ever take off. On a 20% campaign with a $50 cap, a $200 order saves $40 and a $400 order saves $50. The cap does nothing on a fixed-amount discount, which is already capped by its own value.

Exclusions

Excluded products are removed from the base the discount is calculated on, not merely skipped at the end. The base is the cart subtotal minus the subtotal of the excluded lines.

A cart holding $80 of clothing and a $20 gift card, with gift cards excluded, has a $80 base. A 20% campaign takes $16, not $20.

If everything in the cart is excluded, the base is zero and the discount resolves to nothing. The campaign is not broken — there is simply nothing to discount.

Per-market amounts

Tick Customize amounts for each market under Target markets to price the campaign differently by market. Clicking the Discount value, Maximum discount amount or Minimum purchase amount field then opens a market table.

Your primary market takes the amount you type. Other markets show Converted at checkout, meaning Shopify converts the primary amount at the exchange rate at the moment of checkout. Switch Override on beside a market to type a fixed amount in that market's own currency instead.

Percentages are the same everywhere, so per-market amounts only matter for fixed values and thresholds.

What Shopify enforces and what Hype enforces

Shopify owns the code or title, the schedule, customer eligibility, usage limits and Combinations, and it applies the discount at checkout.

Hype owns the value, the cap, the exclusion list, the target markets, the minimum purchase, the purchase type and the sales channels. These are evaluated inside Hype's discount function while the cart is being priced, which is why they are not visible on Shopify's own discount page.

Limits and gotchas

  • Combinations start unchecked. By default this campaign does not stack with any other discount on your store. Tick Product discounts, Order discounts or Shipping discounts if you need it to, and tick the matching box on the other discount too.
  • Only one order-level discount wins. If two order discounts qualify, Shopify applies the better one — they do not add up. That applies inside a multi-discount campaign as well.
  • Maximum discount rules only exist for code campaigns. An automatic Order Discount cannot be limited to one use per customer or to a total number of uses; Shopify does not offer that for automatic discounts.
  • Purchase type defaults to One-time purchase. Subscription orders are not discounted unless you change it.
  • Shopify allows 25 active automatic discounts per store. If activation fails, check that count first.
  • A fixed amount larger than the order does not create a negative total. It takes the order to zero at most.
